Recognizing a need for quality childcare for the children attending the neighborhood elementary school, care that many of these families could not afford, the SouthMac CHAMPS program began accepting children for after school care on October 16, 1995. We have immediate needs for volunteers especially for Bible Story and Tutoring. If you can be available between 3:00-5:00 any weekday, please contact Dot Smith.
We have space for 30 children, K through 5, and are full with a waiting list. The CHAMPS program provides tutoring, supervised free playtime, refreshments, and tender loving care.
STAFF: There are NO paid staff positions. The SouthMac CHAMPS program has a volunteer director who is present every school day and approximately thirty volunteers who work one day per week. The volunteer staff is made up of eleven couples, young mothers, two men who leave their jobs early one day each week, several retired women, four schoolteachers, and teens from the youth group. They simply love these kids!LICENSE: Although the State of Texas no longer requires a free program to be licensed, the SouthMac CHAMPS program maintains a current childcare license because of the health and safety measures a license provides. SUPPORT: The program is supported financially by the members of South MacArthur Church of Christ through a special contribution made each week in the Sunday school classes. We also need good educational C/D programs for the IBM compatible PCs in the Computer Center. CONTACT INFORMATION: Brochures in both English and Spanish are available.
