Are you a missionary?

Mission is who we are as Christians. Seeing ourselves as missionaries in our own culture is not an option. To assume our culture is Christian is naïve. Today, the church is in much the same position in society as the first century church. We are on the margins of society. And ministry from the margins redefines who we are, how we live and pray. Read 1 Peter in terms of being aliens, strangers in the culture. Casual church life and institutional loyalty will not foster the kind of faith that gives a reason for our hope. Such casualness and institutional adherence is far too passive and reactive. No church in the New Testament was at the center of culture. For first century believers, being a Christian was not the "in" thing--it still isn't. If the church is going to be God's people as "salt" and "light" in the world it will take more than membership on a church roll or being a part of the latest spiritual fad. The last time I really listened to Jesus he called me to die--to self and the ways of the world. It's the first step to thinking, being and behaving as a missionary. Lord, help!
